From the Rector: The Format of our Annual Meeting

This year we will be trying a new format for our annual meeting, in which the meeting follows the sermon, and the celebration of the Holy Communion follows the meeting. Our intention is to enact what we believe, that in the eucharist all our life and labors are offered to God. When we begin with the liturgy of the word, we create a context for our work together, so that our Who Is My Neighbor report, our election of officers, and our discussion of our budget, flow from our understanding of God’s call to us, as to the faithful of every generation. All these things, done in God’s name, are holy. All are responses to God’s word in scripture and tradition. When our business is concluded, we will gather up symbols of our work as part of our offering: the reports, a ballot indicating the new vestry members and wardens, and a copy of our budget. Everything we do is gathered up and offered at the altar, where by God’s grace, it is transformed and offered back to us as gift. When we see all our work together as done in God’s name, and offered as gift, we receive strength for the journey to come. God is calling to us, and part of our response is the work we do together at our meeting. Please join us as we do “the work of the people.” That’s the meaning of liturgy.

One more thing: as part of our Who Is My Neighbor report, you’ll see some pictures of our neighbors and neighborhood in the church. These will be in place for that one day only. As always, I invite you to contact me with comments and questions.

Peace,

Saint Andrew Episcopal Church
Vestry Election - January 29, 2012
Candidates for Wardens - To serve one year terms. May serve up to three consecutive terms

For Senior Warden: Rich Rinehart

Rich Rinehart

Since coming to St. Andrew’s in the Fall of 2005, Carol and I have felt welcomed, included and incorporated into the life of the parish. I have been a member of the Vestry, chair of the Evangelism Ministry and Ministry Collaboration Team, and been involved in the Stewardship and Sacred Vision, Sacred Space Campaigns over the past four years. Carol and I are also very active with Project Education Sudan building schools in rural villages in South Sudan. In my professional life I am CFO and a Managing Director of a private company. Most recently I was a strategic and organizational consultant with my own firm. Prior to coming to Colorado in 1996, I was a CPA in California for twenty-three years. Carol and I have two grown children, Amy, living here in Colorado, and Justin, who is married to Julie, with children Joseph and Jack, living in Montana.

This is a very important time in the life of St. Andrew’s parish. We have so much to be thankful for with the hope and promise of our new Rector and our beautiful new Sanctuary giving us the ability to share this wonderful, inclusive, spiritual community with others.

For Junior Warden: Chris Buri

Chris Buri

Advent of 2009 was the first time Julie and I worshiped at St Andrews. By the end of the service, we knew we had found the church we had been searching for. Julie is a cradle Episcopalian and I was received into the Episcopal Church in 1988. Both Julie and I have strong convictions that being members of a church community carries with it responsibilities of regular worship, pledging, and actively participating in church ministries. Therefore, when Mother Elizabeth asked me to serve as Junior Warden, I accepted.

I previously served on vestries and held the position of Junior Warden twice. Both Julie and I served on altar guilds, as small group leaders, and on newcomer committees. I was owner’s agent for a building expansion at St. Ambrose in Boulder, working with the same contractor that St. Andrew’s hired for the building project! I volunteered and served on the board of directors at the St Francis Center. Most recently, I have organized the past two St. Andrew’s Men’s Retreats.

Julie (she’s the one with the vintage hats) and I have been married 24 years. We have two grown children, married and living in Oregon. My career has been in the construction industry, in construction management, but primarily in sales of building material and structural components.

I’m excited and honored to serve this wonderful congregation. My contact info: cell – 720 530-7535, email cburi@ufpi.com. Please feel free to contact me with your issues and concerns.

Candidates for Vestry - To serve three year terms. Three to be elected.

Ashley Bracken

Ashley Bracken

I moved to Denver in April 2007 for my current position as Corporate Counsel for Emergency Medical Services Corporation. Upon arriving, I immediately engaged in a church search which led me to St. Andrew’s, where I was fortunate enough to hear Mother Connie’s final month and a half of sermons.

Since becoming a member of St. Andrew’s, I have participated in the Catechumenate, served as an Acolyte since 2009, and chaired the Audit Committee last year. I am originally from Tyler, Texas, located in the heart of East Texas about 90 miles east of Dallas where I was raised in the Episcopal Church.

I currently serve on the boards of Anchor Center for Blind Children and Allegro, the professionals group of Opera Colorado, and I am a past member of Denver Active 20-30 Children’s Foundation. Outside of work and volunteering, I enjoy snowboarding and hiking 14ers – both activities I picked up after moving to Colorado - and as often as possible, I travel back to Texas to see my family.

Ben Cordova

Ben Cordova

I am seeking a position on the Vestry at this time because I have had a long-standing interest in doing so. I wished to delay serving in this capacity until retirement from full-time career employment because I believed that Vestry membership would require substantial time for me to make such service a top priority. On September 30, 2011, I retired from a career of more than forty years of full-time employment in coordinating the implementation of all civil rights (equal opportunity) laws in both employment and the delivery of services in a variety of organizations. Organizations included the City of Boulder, the National Center for Atmospheric Research, the Colorado Department of Institutions, the Colorado Department of Human Services, the Colorado Department of Transportation, and private non-profit organizations.

Throughout my career, I worked on numerous planning committees with diverse representation, most often coordinating their work, to create consensus on strategies to create diversity and maintain equal opportunities for a diversity of groups. I would bring this experience, as well as my experiences in the Episcopal Church described below, to the Vestry if elected.

Following is a summary of my background during my six-year membership at Saint Andrew’s:

For three and one-half years, served as a member of the Sacred Vision-Sacred Space Committee that planned the expansion of the Saint Andrew’s Church. This required regular monthly meetings, and sometimes special Committee meetings, to discuss issues related to the building expansion design. These meetings involved working together with members from diverse backgrounds to reach consensus on issues related to design.

For eighteen months, served as Co-chair of the Landscape Committee that restored the damaged courtyard and other areas of the parish grounds following the completion of the building expansion. This included leading the planning of the restoration of the courtyard and grounds, which had been severely damaged by the building construction. This also included coordinating the complete rebuilding of the courtyard with 100% volunteer workers and a very small budget of less than $3000. The courtyard restoration was originally budgeted for $18,000; but the Sacred Vision-Sacred Space Committee found it necessary to utilize nearly all of the funds for features related to the building expansion.

Participated on the Ministry Collaboration Committee.

For four years, participated in the Movable Feasts Ministry.

Following is a summary of my background during my five-year membership at Saint John’s Cathedral:

Completed three years of the course “Education for Ministry”.

Completed the one-year Catechumenate course.

Served as an acolyte for one year.

My career in implementing civil rights (equal opportunity) statutes, and my experiences in the Episcopal Church, have taught me that inclusion of persons from all groups makes an organization stronger. I am committed to this principle, and will work diligently to make Saint Andrew’s a parish where all persons, regardless of their economic status, membership in any particular group or culture, feel welcome and valued at Saint Andrew’s.

Debbie Courtney

Debbie Courtney

I grew up in New Haven, Connecticut and belonged to Christ Church where I attended, and eventually taught, Sunday school and participated in the youth group. I graduated from an Episcopal college, Hobart & William Smith in Geneva, NY where I was a member and chorister in St. John’s Chapel. The following years were spent as a clergy spouse throughout western NY, finally settling in Elmira, New York where I stayed until my move to Denver in 1996. In Elmira, I was very active in Grace Church, serving in the choir, on the Altar Guild, on the Vestry, as a layreader, as a Sunday school teacher and as adult education coordinator for a year.

When I moved to Denver, I joined my daughter and family at St John’s Cathedral before moving on to St. Andrews which I joined in January of 1997. I have sung in St. Andrews choir since that time and served for several years on the Evangelism Commission. I have also served as a layreader and usher when my choir duties do not conflict. For a number of years, I have coordinated the Moveable Feasts dinners and I am a welcome letter writer for the Parish Life Committee.

If elected to the Vestry, I would be happy to offer my service because St. Andrews has been a true gift from God in my life and the lives of so many others.

Sue Kilgore

Sue Kilgore

I don’t think I’ve ever been a part of a church that is so intellectually lively, spiritually gratifying, and full of good humor as St. Andrew’s. My life here started in 2002, not long after Roger and I moved to Denver from Washington, DC. St. Andrew’s became both a spiritual and social anchor for us. I immediately joined the choir and feel privileged to be part of such a superb music program.

I’ve served on the Stewardship Committee and the Bylaws Committee. In 2008 and 2009, I co-chaired the committee that called Elizabeth to be our Rector. Currently, I am part of the Adult Forum Committee and will soon be participating in the Who is My Neighbor task force. Through each of these endeavors, I’ve been deeply enriched. But there’s so much more. When I was dealing with cancer and chemotherapy, this community offered itself to me with a generosity and warmth that continues to lift my spirits. Each week, I encounter God, myself, and others in new ways through worship and interaction with the people who worship with me. And so I would welcome the opportunity to participate in the ongoing work of shaping the vision and direction of this community. We’ve come so far. There are numerous challenges and opportunities ahead. As St. Andrew’s had been such a gift to me, I hope to give back in a way that will help to move us into a long, joyous, generous future.

Outside St. Andrew’s, I’m an attorney and a farmer. I work for the Federal Labor Relations Authority, managing labor issues for Federal agencies and the unions that represent their employees. My parents left to their five daughters a farm in Northeastern Colorado. So I’m continuing to learn the business of farming as well as the ways in which the forces of nature shape our lives.

Rick Larson

Rick Larson

It has been some 12 years since my friend Leland Dirks said to me, “You need to come and visit my church.” Leland knew that I was struggling to find a church home, and so I took him up on the invitation. After that first Sunday, I never left.

Some quick facts about me:

Education – MPA with an emphasis in public sector finance and economics.

Work – A wonderful and challenging career at the Colorado Public Employees’ Retirement Association, Director of Benefit Services; now retired.

Church involvement over the years – outreach ministry, acolyte, catechist, past Senior Warden, Finance Committee, Endowment Committee, general volunteer for other groups as needed.

St. Andrew’s has been for me a place to mature in faith and in community. So many of you have been mentors to me: showing me how to awaken faith with works, scrutinizing and sometimes making irreverent comments on certain Bible passages, dedicated volunteers giving freely of their time, talent and treasure, couples demonstrating healthy loving relationships, friends generously giving love and support.

St. Andrew’s has also shown me the emotional depth of faith:, tears at a Good Friday service, a sense of joy at the dedication service for our expanded space, a filling of sacred pride at our first same gender blessing services, a feeling of community at a boisterous and noisy coffee hour. And yes, the people at St. Andrew’s have even tolerated times when I have been red with rage over some matter that, in retrospect, was trivial.

Vision for Our Community. So many aspects of St. Andrew’s are wonderful: beautiful music and worship, sound preaching, vibrant programming and substantive outreach. Here’s why I am excited about the vision statement articulated by our Vestry in 2011: “A community of seekers celebrating, serving, sharing. Come and see.”

My hope has always been that St. Andrew’s will become a center, or hub, for this neighborhood. Here are some examples of what that might look like:

A place where everyone in this neighborhood would view this church as their own church even if they are not members of the parish or do not regularly attend here,

A place that is making a positive impact on the neighborhood and those who live in it, and,

An organization dedicated to assisting those in need through its own efforts and through joining with other groups in these efforts.

Last, I would like to note a welcome development here at St. Andrew’s. Twelve years ago, St. Andrew’s was pretty much an empty-nester church – no kids. We now have families and kids who enliven our life. I love it. I love seeing the families come to worship, chat and hug each other, displaying a sense or warmth. I love the meaningful and substantive participation of kids in our worship and life together. It is a true sign of our life, vitality, and future.

Pam Stewart

Pam Stewart

Having been reared in a fundamentalist church, by the time I reached late adolescence, I’d lost hope in the institutional church. I floundered about seeking randomly, visiting various denominations, and not landing anywhere that I felt satisfied. In 1997, while living in an ecumenical Christian community, a visitor to our retreat center invited me to St. Andrew’s one Sunday. I visited that week and have never left. I fell in love with the liturgy and the Eucharist. The first time I experienced the incense I thought, “another sense in which to worship”. In 2000 I was confirmed and have been an active member since, serving on the altar guild and in more recent years, serving as an acolyte and Eucharistic visitor. I have found home in this community.

Professionally I am a physician assistant with a background in critical care and family medicine and am currently practicing obstetrics and gynecology. I spent a year living with the Benedictine sisters in Colorado Springs and took a 2 year course in spiritual direction. I have also completed EFM and have taken a unit of Clinical Pastoral Education which have been wonderful growth experiences. I am active with the Colorado Haiti Project, working closely with the medical director of the project, planning and leading health and education mission trips to Haiti. I am honored to have been asked to be a candidate to serve on our vestry. I have seen our church and community grow dramatically since my first visit 14 years ago and am hopeful in our future of loving and serving the world.

A message from Cynthia Katsarelis: I deeply regret that I have to remove myself from consideration for serving on the Vestry this year. I talked with Elizabeth+ and we agree that very recent developments in my family will require significant time and commuting to Virginia, and that’s not readily compatible with giving Vestry the time and reflection that’s needed. I regret having to pull out, I was honored to be asked to run, and I hope to serve in the future. Feel free to talk to me about this if you wish.

Further Nominations: The Bylaws provide: “Should the [nominating] committee receive in writing from an adult member of the Parish, at least three days prior to the meeting, a proposed nomination of any qualified person for any office or vacancy, then the committee shall place that person’s name in nomination.” Nominations from the floor are not permitted. Members of the nominating committee: Liz Evans, Lynn Hardcastle, and Judie James.

This community is a gift from God, and we are all its stewards in this world, entrusted to use our gifts to make God’s love visible here in this neighborhood in downtown Denver. The people of St. Andrew’s have been and continue to be generous with their time, their talent and their treasure to ensure that this community’s ministry and missions serve as a bright light on the corner of 20th & Glenarm.

Think about what drew you and continues to draw you to St. Andrew’s – the warm and welcoming parish family; the opportunity for your children to learn about and meet Jesus; the intentional service we do in this city and around the world; the well-kept and well-loved gardens and grounds; the intelligent and eloquent clergy whose sermons and presence encouraged you to ask questions, or to find God’s love in your daily life; the transcendent vocal music and worship that links us to Christians of ages past, and that brings Christ’s presence into our lives today; the fact that, in our renovated building, you can slip in right after the procession and find a comfortable seat.

The generosity of our parish family makes each of these things vital, possible and real. This is our time to support all that is good about St. Andrew’s. Ongoing pledge support from about 130 households helps us to live out God’s mission in our community, our neighborhood, and the world. In 2012 it will cost nearly $9000 a week to do that. Over 75% of our revenue comes from your pledges, so that’s about $3000 per household per year, based on the estimated number of pledging units.

Some St. Andrew’s parishioners are able to give $10 a week, or $10 a month. Some give $100 a month, some $100 a week; many give something in between. And there are some who are able to, and feel called to give $1000 a month or more. Some saints at St. Andrew’s give hundreds and thousands of hours of their time over the course of the year, and over a hundred of us volunteer on a regular basis. Every gift of time and money is precious and every gift provides our community with the resources we need to continue to be the kind of community God is calling all of us to be.

It is for you to discern how you will participate in our shared mission and ministries through the gift that is right, generous, and faithful for you. Please consider prayerfully how you are called to support our shared ministry and mission. If you would like more detailed information about our 2012 budget, please see below. Then click here to fill out your online pledge card, or call the office to get a paper pledge card. To help us in our planning for next year, please make your pledge this week. And again, thank you. It is your generosity that enables this community to thrive and grow.

The parish income necessary to pay these expenses comes from several sources, including pledges, unpledged income collected in weekly offerings, fundraising (such as the annual parish auction), and reimbursements collected from the parking lots jointly owned by the church and the Urban Land Conservancy. Pledged income is our primary source of revenue, making up more than 75 percent of the income necessary to fund our budgeted expenses. In 2012 it will cost nearly $9000 a week to operate this parish. That’s about $3000 per household per year, based on the estimated number of pledging units.

For All the Saints – Today

Imagine . . . It’s Sunday morning, and you are arriving at church. You walk past grounds that are lovingly tended. You see young children and their parents heading to the nursery, or the Godly Play area. You see old friends gathering at the foot of the steps to catch up on news. Visitors arrive, people who have never been here before, and you see them take in the beauty of our worship space. You arrive at the front door, and a friendly person greets you, and hands you a leaflet. You enter the church, cool in summer and warm in winter, swept and clean, lights on, the altar set with linens and candles. The organ plays, the procession forms, the choir sings, the service begins. Readings, sermon, anthem, bread broken and wine poured out, hands outstretched to receive the mystery and gift of communion, and then we are sent out into the world – but only after coffee hour!

Who makes all this happen? The saints of St. Andrew’s today – you and all those who offer their gifts of time and talent, and treasure. Everything we have is a gift – everything we have, and everything we share. Our church thrives because over 130 volunteers dedicate hours upon hours of faithful service and donate their skills. Our church thrives because over 130 households make a pledge and offer a financial contribution to our mission and ministries. Our common life depends on all these gifts.

During this week, as you give thanks for your blessings, we give thanks for you. And we ask you to consider the place of St. Andrew’s in your life. How will you support St. Andrew’s in the year to come? How are you called to take your place among the saints of today?

For All the Saints, Tomorrow: St. Andrew’s Kids Imagine Our Future

Imagine the St. Andrew’s of the future. Imagine that more kids keep coming to St. Andrew’s, and that as we get older, we have a great youth group to go to. It is a safe place for us to ask big questions, to learn about God, our neighborhood and our world. We become known around our neighborhood for doing service projects with lots of organizations, and we are even working to raise money to go somewhere like Mexico, or Guatemala to build houses and help children.

Imagine that when you drive onto this block, you see not only the church, but places where lots of different people can live. Some of them would have been homeless if it weren’t for the housing here. Imagine a large community garden near the church, which supplies fresh produce to nearby Metro CareRing, and where St. Andrew’s members work with school children from nearby schools to take care of the garden and bring in the harvest.

Imagine a community of college age kids and young adults here, centered around the arts and service. It would bring talented young people from around the country to live in Denver, sing beautiful music, and work in schools where there are no music programs.
Imagine a growing church community, where we don’t just come to worship on Sunday morning. Several services on different days of the week provide the opportunity for many people to pray together and have communion whenever they have Sabbath time, even if it’s not on Sunday.

More people in our neighborhood walk to church, more families come with their children and teenagers. It is a church community of many ages, many backgrounds and many different views about church, but in this place, we are one family.

Tuesday, November 8, 2011

For All the Saints – Tomorrow

Imagine our church, tomorrow. What will it look like? Who will be there? What will be the mission, the passion, the call for those who come after us? The theme of our stewardship campaign this year is For All the Saints – Yesterday, Tomorrow, Today. Join us in reflecting on our past, and consider how you will be part of our future. Between now and Sunday, think about the church we are building for tomorrow. Just as the saints of the past made the church where we work and worship today, our imagining and action now prepare a place for the saints of tomorrow. What kind of church will they inherit from us?

For All the Saints – Yesterday

Someone walking past St. Andrew’s might not expect it to be a place that has seen many saints. We live in a relatively young city, and we located at a corner which is rather hard to find if you don’t know it is there. But we who worship here know better. We know that this space has been home to many saints, and those saints continue to bless and inspire us today.

Our saints have given us the beautiful style of worship that we treasure today. In the 1920s, Father Neil Stanley became the rector of St. Andrew’s, and brought with him the Anglo-Catholic worship style that sets us apart from other churches in this city. The children we now train as acolytes continue a tradition he started, when he invited local children to serve at the altar. It was our history as an Anglo-Catholic parish that in part inspired Father Ken Near to embrace this church in the 1980s. And it is that style of worship that continues to draw people to our church today.

Our saints have given us an example of service. Father Jon Marr Stark inspired this church to be involved in the social issues of his day, reaching out to the homeless, even sheltering them in our building. This space also served as the home of the precursor to the St Francis Center, and Metro CareRing, organizations we still support. With Mother Connie, we helped to start a tutoring program, a residence for people living with HIV/AIDS, and St. Elizabeth’s School, and found other ways to reach out to the community. Today, we continue to ask, “who is my neighbor?” as we find new ways to reach out to our community, following in the steps of the saints of our past.

Our saints have inspired us with their creative and ceaseless stewardship. Father Stanley supported the church by writing stories for pulp fiction magazines. Betty Luce produced plays as a fund raiser for the church. Judie James has spent and continues to spend countless hours making St Andrew’s a special space in the midst of the city (and wore a rainbow dress a s a liturgical dancer). Martha Bollenbacher inspired us to start our endowment fund, which provides funds for outreach to this day. Dorothy Elliot connects us to our lively past, when the word about St. Andrew’s was “hippies in the church.” So many of you have given so much of your time and your resources to keep this church alive and thriving, because stewardship is part of our foundation.

St. Andrews has been and continues to be blessed with saints. They inspire us to worship, they inspire us to serve, and they inspire us to be stewards. Someday we will be the saints that inspire others. This is a blessed corner, and a place that the saints are happy to call home.

St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church

A community of seekers

Celebrating, serving, sharing

Come and see

The vestry has adopted this as a statement of our vision and mission. It speaks of who we are, and what we do. It invites others to join us.

Our hope is that this statement will keep us focused on the tradition we value, and our hopes for the future. It speaks to us of our love of questions, our joy in worship, our commitment to service, and our longing to reach out to others. And it takes this message to those who do not yet know us, those who like us are seeking, and who among us may find what they seek.

Much thought and conversation led to the adoption of this statement. We worked with what you told us a year ago in the parish survey, distilling from what you said the words and phrases, like “worship, service, acceptance, community” that to us “felt most like St. Andrew’s.” We also spent time in prayer and reflection with the story of Jesus’ call to Andrew, our patron (John 1:35-41). Two things were particularly compelling to us in this story, the invitation of Jesus to “Come and see” and the bold statement of Andrew, “We have found the Christ.”

You won’t find any openly religious language in this statement, because we want to speak not only to ourselves but to those who may not use our words for what they are seeking. But the language of our faith is implicit in every word and phrase. For those who long for the words we use in worship, prayer, and formation, I invite you to expand this statement when you hear it, using these or similar words:

St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church

A community of seekers

Celebrating God’s love in worship

Serving Christ in our neighbors and the world

Sharing the power and joy of the Spirit

Come and See

As you’ll see, the statement can expand in many directions, so that it includes more and more of the gifts we receive, what we value in our life together, and what we hope for the future. I invite you to join me in reflecting on this statement, and using it as you speak of this community and what it means to you, and the potential you see here for sharing the message of love and acceptance with a world that is hungry for good news.

As always, I invite you to contact me with any comments or questions. — Elizabeth

Couples who are interested in seeking a blessing should contact the rector.

Many thanks to the vestry task force who guided our discernment process, and to all those who told their stories and offered their views during this time. This is an important milestone in the life of our community and we look forward to celebrating the first of these blessings in the Fall of 2011.
