THE CULT OF THE VIRGIN MARY
Tuesday, March 17th from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. at Holy Redeemer
Presented by Skip Meier
The “cult” of the Virgin Mary began to take shape in the Fifth Century but reached its zenith in the High Middle Ages. We will explore the beliefs and worship of Mary in a variety of manners. The primary doctrines, her depiction in art, the differences in belief in the Roman Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican and Protestant traditions, and the prayers, hymns and music written in her honor will be presented. Mary’s life gets short shrift in the New Testament but the church fathers developed a variety of beliefs for the faithful to consider and to use in her veneration. Wikipedia and the Catholic Encyclopedias are tremendous online resources for background reading prior to this presentation.
CARING FOR EACH OTHER IN TRANSITION
Tuesday, May 19th from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. at Holy Redeemer
Presented by Carrie Doehring
As St. Andrew’s journeys through a pilgrimage of searching for a new rector, leaving its temporary home at Holy Redeemer, and preparing to return home to a space that will be both new and old, how can our religious faith and spirituality be bread for the journey? Carrie will draw upon psychological research on how people draw upon religion in the midst of crisis and transition to explore the unique ways our Episcopal faith helps us cope with stress.
