NEWS FROM ST. ANDREW’S

Ascension Day Service this Thursday
Ascension, one of the principal feasts of the liturgical year, celebrated 40 days after Easter (hence, always on a Thursday), marks Christ’s ascension from the earth after his post-resurrection appearances.  The 10 days between Ascension and Pentecost used to be called “Ascensiontide,” as if it were its own liturgical season.  St. Andrew’s celebrates the feast this Thursday, 5:30pm, with Evensong as the Liturgy of the Word, followed by Eucharist. The service will be followed by a sherry/cider reception in the Common Room.

Music for Our Ascension Ascension Day Service
Preces & Responses:  Richard Ayleward (1626-1659) • Canticle of Light: Coelos ascendit hodie by C. V. Stanford (1852-1924) • Service: C. V. Stanford in C • Anthem: Viri Galilaei by G. P. da Palestina (1525-1594) • Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei from Palestrina’s Missa “Viri Galilaei • Communion motet: Ascendit Deus by G. St. Andrew's Hosts Art and Animation Camp for Kids
artnanimeIn June, St. Andrew's will host School of the Poetic City's urban art and animation camps for children. St. Andrew's parishioners Anne and Peter Thulson will lead 4 week-long sessions for children from across the city, ages 5–14. Anne and Peter previously held their camp at The Odyssey School in the Park Hill neighborhood.

Children attending the Animation Camp (June 4–8 and June 11–15) will make cartoons in the undercroft using stop-motion, cel, and rotoscope techniques. If you're at the church during the day, expect to see teams of inventive children hunched over light tables, iPads, and miniature sets, creating cartoons.

Children attending the Urban Art Camp (June 18–22 and June 25–29) will spend mornings visiting downtown galleries, museums, and installations. They'll spend afternoons making art in the undercroft-atelier. If you're around, consider their creations a "new song."

We hope the children's presence will bless St. Andrew's. We know St. Andrew's will bless them and their families. We are offering scholarships for children who need them and who live in the St. Andrew’s neighborhood. For more information, visit www.schoolofthepoeticcity.com.

Safe Haven – MEN take note!
It has come to our attention that some men in the congregation understood that there is no role for  men to take in support of the Safe Haven ministry.  That is definitely not so.  We have men helping with food, with set-up and clean-up, with laundry, and with staying on either of two shifts while the women are with us.

So, if you were misinformed and would like to help out, please contact Sue Torfin (303-455-3377 or sue@life-fulfillment-coach.com) and she’ll make sure to accept your offer of help.

And Now – the Good News about our Financial Health
As the first four months of 2012 drew to a close, St. Andrew’s has achieved a remarkably strong financial position. In the past couple of years we have given you some dire financial reports.  Now, we want to share our good news. In this article we will briefly examine our financial highlights and successes to date.

In response to parishioner concerns about our annual budget expressed at the annual meeting in January, the Vestry formed a task force to, in part, examine the budget and make recommendations for changes.  As a result, projected expenses were reduced by approximately $19,000 and extra fundraising for the year, the There Will Your Heart Be Also (TWYHBA) line item, was reduced from $58,000 to $23,000.

At the same time the task force was meeting, parishioners showed their commitment to our community by increasing pledged income by some $15,000.

Following the task force recommendations, the Vestry developed a fundraising effort focused on raising the $23,000 in the TWYHBA  line.  Those efforts, which are currently underway, are bearing fruit:

  1. The King Soopers Gift Cards Project was launched on Sunday, April 1, with 100 cards quickly distributed to parishioners.  One month into that project, some $500 was received by St. Andrew’s and parishioner requests for more cards are still coming in.
  2. The Yellow Envelope Campaign for Outreach launched on Sunday, April 15, and lasting until the end of May is well on its way to raising $10,000 to fund all of our budgetary commitments for outreach partners during 2012.
  3. On May 6, a special music event was held to raise funds for St. Andrew’s music ministries.  This event, which was attended by 72 people, raised some $7400 for this area of ministry. Many of those who attended were not St. Andrew’s parishioners, so this event also brought many new people to our church.
As of the end of April, income has exceeded expenses by over $12,000.  This dollar amount exceeds our budgetary projections for this time frame and was mainly realized through increased giving and through holding down expenses especially in the areas of music and buildings and grounds.  If you would like to see specific financial information, the current financial statements are posted on the bulletin board in the undercroft, and also posted electronically on the St. Andrew’s website.

At this point, we are very thankful for the great commitment shown by the people of St. Andrew’s to ensure our continued financial stability and strength.  While we are ending the first four months of 2012 in a strong position, summer months are fast approaching. In our church, as in many other churches, giving has historically fallen off in the summer and other expenses come to the forefront. Help us keep our financial position strong this summer – and thank you for all you have done so far to bring us to this healthy, secure position!

Yellow Envelope Campaign - We're almost there!
Thank you to the many who have contributed to the Yellow Envelope Campaign for Outreach. As of Sunday, we're most of the way to our goal! We've raised $8200 from many donors, as many as 69!* With your help, we'll bring in another $1800, and reach our $10,000 goal by Pentecost.  When we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit among us, on Sunday, May 27, we'll give thanks as well for our common commitment to generous support of those in need.

As you know, this Yellow Envelope campaign is about maintaining our planned support for our Fundamental Partner ministries, our neighborhood outreach, and now, in-house Outreach through Safe Haven and the Sandwich Ministry.

The need in our own neighborhood has increased. St. Francis Center, one of our Fundamental Partners, is seeing 150 more clients per day than they were this time last year -- and they have suffered cuts in funding. The Denver City Council has passed a "no camping" ordinance that will adversely affect neighbors who have nowhere to go. This means our new Safe Haven weekly shelter for women is more needed than ever. Every agency with whom we partner can tell a similar story.

We are a community who live in the power of the Resurrection. This is what we proclaim week by week, in our liturgy, in the reconciliation and healing we experience in our own lives, and through our acts of loving service to our neighbors.  We can't do it all. But we make a difference. Join us now in making a difference in the lives of those near and far.

Thank you!

*(Some people may have put cash in an envelope more than once.)

Help Enhance Our Communal Worship: Become a Lector
We are looking for new members to join the readers/ushers who serve our community, enhancing our worship each week.  The time commitment is minimal, and the rewards are great!  Through this ministry we are able to reflect deeply on the Word of God, share it joyfully with others, and get to know our community even better.  If you are interested in joining us, please contact Mary Brinig at mbrinig@gmail.com or 303-250-3183 by May 28.

Summer Services Schedule
Please note we will switch to our summer service schedule on Sunday, May 27.  Services will be held at 8:00 am and 10:00 am.  The 8:00 am service is a low mass, with no music and a short homily.  The 10:00 am service is a sung service, with our summer choir.

41st Annual People's Fair Road Closures
This year the People's Fair will be held June 2 - 3.  As of press time the organizers have not released a road closure map.  Please keep an eye on the eMinistry and Sunday leaflet and we will link you to the closure maps as soon as they are available.

St. Andrew’s Literary Society
St. Andrew’s Literary Society will meet for the last reading of this season on May 22. We will be reading A. Byatt’s  “Possesion” with discussion lead by Bronwyn Alleman.    Next meeting is Tuesday, May 22 at 7:00 pm in the Delzell Room.   As always, all are welcome.   Light refreshments will be served.   If any questions, please contact Barbara Becker at sadiethelady@comcast.net.

Peak Performance Series This Saturday Features Haydn & Mozart
The final concert in the Peak Performances Chamber Series is this Saturday, May 19, 4:00pm, at St. Andrew’s, featuring a string quartet performing Josef Haydn’s “The Seven Last Words,” and Wolfgang Mozart’s Te Deum (K. 141) with members of the St. Andrew’s Choir.  Interspersed between the musical movements, Dr. Gregory Robbins, chair of Religious Studies at DU, will offer brief theological reflections on each of the “Seven Last Words;” and Fr. Chrysostom Frank, Pastor of St. Elizabeth’s Roman Catholic Church and the Sts. Cyril and Methodius Byzantine Orthodox Catholic Community, will give a meditation on the Te Deum

Haydn wrote “The Seven Last Words” as seven separate sonatas for string quartet, meant to be performed on Good Friday between meditations on the “Words.”  Their popularity compelled Haydn to write an orchestral version, and later to add choral parts.  Many argue that the original version for string quartet, however, remains the most starkly powerful.  The quartet will then perform, along with members of the St. Andrew’s Choir, a Mozart Te Deum to round off the concert with an appropriately uplifting acknowledgement of the Easter Season in which the concert takes place.

Tickets are $20, and can be purchased at the door.

Harmony: a Colorado chorale presents: One Nation, Many Voices
Saturday May 19 @ 7:30pm and Sunday May 20 @ 2:00pm, Messiah Community Church, 1750 Colorado Blvd, $17 in advance, $20 @ at the door.

This concert is an entertaining mix of music by American composers, and we will be joined by special guests the Rocky Mountain Rainbeaus for several numbers.  This will be the kick-off of  an exciting summer for Harmony as Denver will be hosting the quadrennial international GALA Festival in July.  The festival will feature over 5,000 singers and 150 choruses from around the world sharing the joy of their music.  Tickets for the July festival performances will be available to the public, but will be very hard to get, so join us in May and see our full show.  As always, it will be filled with lots of tears, laughter and other surprises!  Please contact Lisa Sisneros for advance ticket information.
