From Diagnosis to Renewal: A conversation with Brian Hyde on recreating life with Parkinson’s
Today following the 10am service in the Delzell Room
We are all familiar with the story of someone whose life has been reset by the diagnosis of disease. This Sunday we welcome and encourage you to join in a conversation with our own parishioner Brian Hyde as he shares his journey with Parkinson’s Disease. Through denial, trials, learning, re-learning, Brian has gained much insight as he continues to wrestle with recreating life in a new reality.
In this interactive dialogue, Brian will provide us with some facts on Parkinson’s, relate his story and invite us to consider our own lives in light of its trials and surprises.
Walk Through Time with St. Andrew’s
From a traditional, upstanding congregation in the 1950s to a more alternative type of community in the 70s and 80s, to a mission of St. John’s Cathedral, and finally the growing and thriving tree of life rooted in a growing and rapidly changing city that we know today: St. Andrew’s has a colorful and vibrant history. As part of our summer of Rest, Reflection, and Renewal, a Walk Through Time is taking place in the Undercroft this Sunday, July 17 during the coffee hours following each service. Everyone, short term and longtime members, young and old alike, are invited to add your memories and knowledge, impressions and stories to the wall that represents the Walk Through Time at Saint Andrews. You are encouraged to share your memories (whether first hand or something you’ve heard from others) about everything from baptisms to weddings, comings and goings, births and deaths, fires, concerts, priests’ tenures, and other special memories of the community. Short poems, sentences, impressions, pictures, cut outs, photos – anything you want to contribute to the wall will be welcome. Markers and crayons will be available. You can add to The Walk Through Time and marvel at its magnificence until it is presented to Mother Elizabeth upon her return in September. Anyone with questions can contact Bill Calkins at wjcalkins@yahoo.com.
When you go to coffee today after the service be sure to look for the Walk Through Time. As part of our summer of Rest, Reflection, and Renewal, this walk on the wall represents our individual and communal memories. Everyone is invited to add something.
Picture Frames
We are seeking donations of good-quality picture frames for an art project in the Undercroft. Frames should have secure hooks or picture wire. Maximum dimensions of frames should be 8 by 10 inches and minimum 3 by 5 inches. Donations of picture hooks would also be welcome. Please email Ruth Carver Bondurant at rucarver@gmail.com with questions or if you have a frame or three to donate – we’ll arrange for collection on an upcoming Sunday.
A Parish Soul Collage
As we continue into the heart of our season of renewal, the whole parish is invited to contribute to our soul collage.
The squares can be expressive of the season’s theme – rest, reset, recreate – or can be a, playful, contemplative, joyous, way of doing the theme.
Art making as a process of self-discovery. Art making as a way to worship.
The final piece will be a visual display of our depth, diversity and unity, unveiled at our RECONNECTION event to mark Mother Elizabeth’s return from sabbatical on September 4th, 2016.
Squares are provided by the church and are available after each service and in the parish office throughout July. For further information please contact: Matt Bentley m.t.bentley@gmail.com or Kylie Schwartz kylschwartz@gmail.com / 303-875-2523.

Season of Renewal Book Study
We Are Theologians: Strengthening the People of God (2004) by Fredrica Harris Thompsett
Led by Sue Torfin on Thursday evenings, 7:00-8:30, August 4, 11, and 18 in the Delzell Room
(Books available for $16 after services from July 17)
As our sabbatical season draws to a close we ponder the question of “what now?”
All are welcome in a time of reflection and discussion as we join together in this timely book study. In her book, Thompsett credits the laity with the capacity to relate questions of belief and the insights of theology to the living out of our personal and professional lives. She offers both a theology of the laity and a solid grounding in the history, theology, spirituality, and biblical foundations of Anglicanism, particularly the Episcopal Church.
Thompsett begins with what the Bible reveals about the distinct calling of the people of God. She then considers the insights of the Reformation about the laity. Focusing on the particular contributions of the laity in the nineteenth century, she highlights the work of women in the mission of education and social work. She explores different aspect of Anglican identity that are especially important to the lay calling, as well as lay movements of liberation in the global South. In the final chapter, she points the way to strengthening the laity of the future.
As we journey through this book together, may our hearts be opened to a new and surprising way of seeing our place in the world.

Loaves & Fishes Sunday, July 31
“…Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And all ate and were filled…” – Matthew 14: 19 & 20
Just as this story of abundant sharing reminds us, we too are charged to feed the hungry! St. Andrew’s has a long tradition of supporting Metro Caring’s work to feed the hungry in Denver. On Sunday, July 31, we will be gathering Loaves and Fishes donations left at the alter after either service and delivering them to Metro Caring. Thank you!
St Andrew’s Mission and Outreach Committee
Metro Caring’s suggested shopping list includes:
3 cans of tuna fish
2 jars of peanut butter
2 cans of fruit in a light sauce
1 jar of pasta sauce
1 package of whole wheat spaghetti
1 box of macaroni & cheese
2 cans of a hearty soup
Education for Ministry (EfM)
The Joint St. Andrew’s/Holy Redeemer EDUCATION FOR MINISTRY (EfM) Program is Recruiting for September, 2016
INFORMATIONAL MEETING will be held: July 17, 11:15 a.m., Community Room, Holy Redeemer, 2552 Williams
IT’S AN ALL NEW PROGRAM with new books and a new curriculum but the same great theological education/formation experience! The joint St. Andrew’s/Holy Redeemer EfM class is recruiting new members for September 2016.
Are you:
…Interested in deepening your faith and your understanding of our Christian heritage, learning how to think theologically, and becoming more confident to be Christ’s minister in the world?
…Wondering “what’s next” after finishing Catechumenate?
…Or for you EfM graduates/participants—are you missing the small group intimacy and learning environment? Thinking you didn’t “absorb” enough the first time around ? If so, please consider joining our group.
EfM helps students encounter the breadth and depth of the Christian tradition and bring it into relevance with their experiences of the world today as they study, worship, and engage in theological reflection together.
The joint EfM group of St. Andrew’s and Holy Redeemer will begin a new year of study in September. Students who have already committed to the group will be in their second and third years of study. They and the co-mentors are inviting new students from both St. Andrew’s and Holy Redeemer to join the group.
If you are at all curious about EfM, please contact Selena Billington (303-494-8624; selena.billington@fitchfamily.org), Pennie Goodman, (303-913-2208; pjchubb@aol.com) or Jennifer Macy (303-320-1276; macy.jennifer@comcast.net) and/or come to an informational meeting at Holy Redeemer, Sunday, July 17, in the Community Room after the 10:00 service (around 11:15).
Deadline: Required paperwork and payment (or arrangements) must be submitted to Selena by Friday, August 5. Scholarships and/or financial assistance may be available.
St. Andrew’s Annual Backpack Drive is here!
Every year, the list and cost of school supplies for families grows, often leaving schools in lower income areas without vital supplies for their students. Through Sunday, August 14th, the St. Andrew’s Children’s Ministry will be accepting commonly needed school supplies to help support needy children in Denver. Please consider donating pencils, pens, crayons, paper, etc. and place them in the boxes or bins in the undercroft. This event has grown every year and has been a wonderful way to integrate the children into the life of St. Andrew’s. Please direct any questions to Jason Parker theauthor01@gmail.com
Summer Sunday School
We give our regular Sunday School volunteers the summer off. On six Summer Sundays we will have a One-Room Schoolhouse for children and youth (4-13 years) in the undercroft for those who don’t wish to sit through the 10am service (busy boards and books available for those who do and/or when there is no Sunday School). Please don’t miss our Summer Sunday School on August 7, 14, and 21. We return to our regular schedule of Godly Play every Sunday for ages 4 to 4th grade and TSE every other week for 5th to 9th graders on September 11.
Summer Choir
Through August, the choir is open to all comers. The only requirement to sing the Sunday 10:00am service is to show up at 9:00am for rehearsal. There is no vesting; familiar or easy anthems are the norm; and a quartet of staff singers insures competent coverage on every part, so there is no risk. It is meant to be an opportunity for those who cannot commit to the rigors of the full choir schedule nevertheless to have the chance to participate in our fine music program. Any and all are welcome.
Concert Recommendation by Brian Hyde: Our daughter, Joanna, and her boyfriend, Tadhg, are visiting from Dublin. Joanna, Tadhg and her brother, Iain will perform at Swallow Hill (27 E. Yale) on Saturday, July 23 at 7pm – all are welcome, especially anyone that might like Irish, bluegrass, Americana, and Swing.
St. Francis Center needs: Men’s underwear – Size 30–38 (boxers preferred!) | Dollar Tree reading glasses | Vaseline
Metro Caring invites you to Cornucopia– its signature fundraising event to support a food waste and hunger free Denver – held September 28th, 5-8pm. This year’s event will feature keynote speaker, Dana Gunders, Senior Scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council. As a national leader in food-waste mitigation, Dana recently published her first book, the Waste-Free Kitchen Handbook, which offers a consumer guide to reducing wasted food from the grocery store to the kitchen. Kyle Clark of 9News will return as host. This is not an event you want to miss! An exciting challenge will be issued to the entire city of Denver. Visit www.MetroCaring.org to learn more and purchase tickets!
