From Diagnosis to Renewal:  A conversation
with Brian Hyde on recreating life with Parkinson’s

Today following the 10am service in the Delzell Room
We are all familiar with the story of someone whose life has been reset by the diagnosis of disease.  This Sunday we welcome and encourage you to join in a conversation with our own parishioner Brian Hyde as he shares his journey with Parkinson’s Disease.  Through denial, trials, learning, re-learning, Brian has gained much insight as he continues to wrestle with recreating life in a new reality.
In this interactive dialogue, Brian will provide us with some facts on Parkinson’s, relate his story and invite us to consider our own lives in light of its trials and surprises.

Walk Through Time with St. Andrew’s

From a traditional, upstanding congregation in the 1950s to a more alternative type of community in the 70s and 80s, to a mission of St. John’s Cathedral, and finally the growing and thriving tree of life rooted in a growing and rapidly changing city that we know today: St. Andrew’s has a colorful and vibrant history. As part of our summer of Rest, Reflection, and Renewal, a Walk Through Time is taking place in the Undercroft this Sunday, July 17 during the coffee hours following each service. Everyone, short term and longtime members, young and old alike, are invited to add your memories and knowledge, impressions and stories to the wall that represents the Walk Through Time at Saint Andrews. You are encouraged to share your memories (whether first hand or something you’ve heard from others) about everything from baptisms to weddings, comings and goings, births and deaths, fires, concerts, priests’ tenures, and other special memories of the community. Short poems, sentences, impressions, pictures, cut outs, photos – anything you want to contribute to the wall will be welcome. Markers and crayons will be available. You can add to The Walk Through Time and marvel at its magnificence until it is presented to Mother Elizabeth upon her return in September. Anyone with questions can contact Bill Calkins at wjcalkins@yahoo.com.

When you go to coffee today after the service be sure to look for the Walk Through Time. As part of our summer of Rest, Reflection, and Renewal, this walk on the wall represents our individual and communal memories. Everyone is invited to add something.

 Picture Frames

We are seeking donations of good-quality picture frames for an art project in the Undercroft. Frames should have secure hooks or picture wire. Maximum dimensions of frames should be 8 by 10 inches and minimum 3 by 5 inches. Donations of picture hooks would also be welcome. Please email Ruth Carver Bondurant at rucarver@gmail.com with questions or if you have a frame or three to donate – we’ll arrange for collection on an upcoming Sunday.

A Parish Soul Collage

As we continue into the heart of our season of renewal, the whole parish is invited to contribute to our soul collage.

The squares can be expressive of the season’s theme – rest, reset, recreate – or can be a, playful, contemplative, joyous, way of doing the theme.

Art making as a process of self-discovery.  Art making as a way to worship.

The final piece will be a visual display of our depth, diversity and unity, unveiled at our RECONNECTION event to mark Mother Elizabeth’s return from sabbatical on September 4th, 2016.

Squares are provided by the church and are available after each service and in the parish office throughout July.  For further information please contact:   Matt Bentley m.t.bentley@gmail.com or Kylie Schwartz kylschwartz@gmail.com /  303-875-2523.

Season of Renewal Book Study

We Are Theologians: Strengthening the People of God (2004) by Fredrica Harris Thompsett

Led by Sue Torfin on Thursday evenings, 7:00-8:30, August 4, 11, and 18 in the Delzell Room

(Books available for $16 after services from July 17)

As our sabbatical season draws to a close we ponder the question of “what now?”

All are welcome in a time of reflection and discussion as we join together in this timely book study.  In her book, Thompsett credits the laity with the capacity to relate questions of belief and the insights of theology to the living out of our personal and professional lives.  She offers both a theology of the laity and a solid grounding in the history, theology, spirituality, and biblical foundations of Anglicanism, particularly the Episcopal Church.

Thompsett begins with what the Bible reveals about the distinct calling of the people of God.  She then considers the insights of the Reformation about the laity. Focusing on the particular contributions of the laity in the nineteenth century, she highlights the work of women in the mission of education and social work.  She explores different aspect of Anglican identity that are especially important to the lay calling, as well as lay movements of liberation in the global South.  In the final chapter, she points the way to strengthening the laity of the future.

As we journey through this book together, may our hearts be opened to a new and surprising way of seeing our place in the world.

Loaves & Fishes Sunday, July 31

“…Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. And all ate and were filled…” – Matthew 14: 19 & 20

Just as this story of abundant sharing reminds us, we too are charged to feed the hungry! St. Andrew’s has a long tradition of supporting Metro Caring’s work to feed the hungry in Denver. On Sunday, July 31, we will be gathering Loaves and Fishes donations left at the alter after either service and delivering them to Metro Caring. Thank you!

St Andrew’s Mission and Outreach Committee

Metro Caring’s suggested shopping list includes:

3 cans of tuna fish

 2 jars of peanut butter
2 cans of fruit in a light sauce
1 jar of pasta sauce
1 package of whole wheat spaghetti
1 box of macaroni & cheese
2 cans of a hearty soup

Education for Ministry (EfM)

The Joint St. Andrew’s/Holy Redeemer EDUCATION FOR MINISTRY (EfM) Program is Recruiting for September, 2016

INFORMATIONAL MEETING  will be held:  July 17, 11:15 a.m., Community Room, Holy Redeemer, 2552 Williams

IT’S AN ALL NEW PROGRAM with new books and a new curriculum but the same great theological education/formation experience!  The joint St. Andrew’s/Holy Redeemer EfM class is recruiting new members for September 2016.

Are you:

…Interested in deepening your faith and your understanding of our Christian heritage, learning how to think theologically, and becoming more confident to be Christ’s minister in the world?

…Wondering “what’s next” after finishing Catechumenate?

…Or for you EfM graduates/participants—are you missing the small group intimacy and learning environment?  Thinking you didn’t “absorb” enough the first time around ?   If so, please consider joining our group.

EfM helps students encounter the breadth and depth of the Christian tradition and bring it into relevance with their experiences of the world today as they study, worship, and engage in theological reflection together.

The joint EfM group of St. Andrew’s and Holy Redeemer will begin a new year of study in September.  Students who have already committed to the group will be in their second and third years of study.  They and the co-mentors are inviting new students from both St. Andrew’s and Holy Redeemer to join the group.

If you are at all curious about EfM, please contact Selena Billington (303-494-8624; selena.billington@fitchfamily.org), Pennie Goodman, (303-913-2208; pjchubb@aol.com)   or Jennifer Macy (303-320-1276; macy.jennifer@comcast.net) and/or come to an informational meeting at Holy Redeemer, Sunday, July 17, in the Community Room after the 10:00 service (around 11:15).

Deadline:  Required paperwork and payment (or arrangements) must be submitted to Selena by Friday, August 5.  Scholarships and/or financial assistance may be available.

St. Andrew’s Annual Backpack Drive is here!

Every year, the list and cost of school supplies for families grows, often leaving schools in lower income areas without vital supplies for their students. Through Sunday, August 14th, the St. Andrew’s Children’s Ministry will be accepting commonly needed school supplies to help support needy children in Denver. Please consider donating pencils, pens, crayons, paper, etc. and place them in the boxes or bins in the undercroft. This event has grown every year and has been a wonderful way to integrate the children into the life of St. Andrew’s. Please direct any questions to Jason Parker theauthor01@gmail.com

Summer Sunday School

We give our regular Sunday School volunteers the summer off.  On six Summer Sundays we will have a One-Room Schoolhouse for children and youth (4-13 years) in the undercroft for those who don’t wish to sit through the 10am service (busy boards and books available for those who do and/or when there is no Sunday School). Please don’t miss our Summer Sunday School on August 7, 14, and 21.  We return to our regular schedule of Godly Play every Sunday for ages 4 to 4th grade and TSE every other week for 5th to 9th graders on September 11.

Summer Choir

Through August, the choir is open to all comers.  The only requirement to sing the Sunday 10:00am service is to show up at 9:00am for rehearsal.  There is no vesting; familiar or easy anthems are the norm; and a quartet of staff singers insures competent coverage on every part, so there is no risk.  It is meant to be an opportunity for those who cannot commit to the rigors of the full choir schedule nevertheless to have the chance to participate in our fine music program.  Any and all are welcome.

Concert Recommendation by Brian Hyde:  Our daughter, Joanna, and her boyfriend, Tadhg, are visiting from Dublin. Joanna, Tadhg and her brother, Iain will perform at Swallow Hill (27 E. Yale) on Saturday, July 23 at 7pm – all are welcome, especially anyone that might like Irish, bluegrass, Americana, and Swing.

St. Francis Center needs:    Men’s underwear – Size 30–38 (boxers preferred!)  | Dollar Tree reading glasses |   Vaseline

Metro Caring invites you to Cornucopia– its signature fundraising event to support a food waste and hunger free Denver – held September 28th, 5-8pm. This year’s event will feature keynote speaker, Dana Gunders, Senior Scientist at the Natural Resources Defense Council.  As a national leader in food-waste mitigation, Dana recently published her first book, the Waste-Free Kitchen Handbook, which offers a consumer guide to reducing wasted food from the grocery store to the kitchen. Kyle Clark of 9News will return as host. This is not an event you want to miss! An exciting challenge will be issued to the entire city of Denver. Visit www.MetroCaring.org to learn more and purchase tickets!

Season of Renewal

To Live in the Mercy of God
Denise Levertov

To lie back under the tallest
oldest trees.  How far the stems
rise, rise
before the ribs of shelter
open!

To live in the mercy of God.  The complete
sentence too adequate, has no give.
Awe, not comfort. Stone, elbows of
stony wood beneath lenient
moss bed.

And awe suddenly
passing beyond itself.  Becomes
a form of comfort.
Becomes the steady
air you glide on, arms
stretched like the wings of flying foxes.
To hear the multiple silence
of trees, the rainy
forest depths of their listening.
To Live in the Mercy of God

To float, upheld,
as salt water
would hold  you,
once you dared.

To live in the mercy of God.

To feel vibrate the enraptured

waterfall flinging itself
unabating down and down
to clenched fists of rock.
Swiftness of plunge,
Hour after year after century,
O or Ah
uninterrupted, voice
many-stranded.
To breathe
spray.  The smoke of it.
Arcs
Of steelwhite foam, glissades
of fugitive jade barely perceptible.  Such passion—
rage or joy?
Thus, not mild, not temperate,
God’s love for the world.  Vast
flood of mercy
flung on resistance.

Book Study:  The Sabbath
How do we bring about the elusive atmosphere that is the Sabbath?  We know what to do with space, but how do we shape sacred time?  As Mother Elizabeth journeys through her Sabbatical season, we join her in a time of rest and renewal.  Abraham Heschel’s book will help us enter into our season.

Join us Wednesdays at 7pm in the Delzell room for the discussion sessions.  The following topics will be the focus, but the conversation will certainly – and hopefully! – wander.

  • June 22:   Ritual Observance
  • June 29:   Re-engaging with the Sabbath at home and at St. Andrew’s

We only have a couple of books left, so if you’re interested and would like to purchase a copy or for other information, contact Matt Bentley or Kylie Schwartz

Family Promise

Family Promise is an organization that has a program that houses families for a period no longer than 60 days. During that time they are counseled for financial, resume and parenting. Many arrive with jobs, but are not able to obtain housing. By adhering to the rules of family promise, they have proved their stability for paying rent and being good tenants. The families are vetted for the program before being accepted. They have had a very high percentage of positive results for jobs and housing. Please consider helping at this critical time for the program.

The church that was to host the families for July 17-24 no longer participates in the program. First Unitarian Church stepped up to house the families as well as support their stay with food, etc. They have asked St. Andrew’s to continue its participation for a normal rotation for dinners on Wednesday 7/20 and Thursday 7/21, an overnight stay on Thursday 7/21 and breakfast on Saturday 7/23.

There will be a sign-up sheet on the coffee table on Sunday June 12. Please look at your calendars and sign up. These families are so appreciative of our contribution to their well-being and continuing process of getting housing and employment. Hearing their stories is a reminder that each of us could be in their situation, but there for the grace of God we are not.

Any questions please do not hesitate to email Lynne Valentine at lkval@yahoo.com or call 303 955 6911.

Brief Update on Frank and Lynn Huber for our “Beloved Community”.

As some of you know, Frank had a bad right side (brain)/left side (body) stroke on May 28th. He’s in Swedish Acute Rehab unit, which is as good as it gets, and they are planning to keep him longer than normal because they believe he’ll be able to benefit (functionally) from the extra time–a very good sign.

We do not want food or visits. (Special diets for both of us, and Frank has more than enough people to deal with on the staff.) He would welcome cards, especially polite humor, and we both very much covet your prayers. If you want to know more details, please go to this link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/hlsjcp9z6qev2fi/2nd Update 6-7-16 NEW PAGES DOC.pdf?dl=0

FINALLY PLEASE DO NOT PUT ANY OF THIS ON SOCIAL MEDIA OF ANY KIND. Many thanks.

How do we bring about the elusive atmosphere that is the Sabbath?  We know what to do with space, but how do we shape sacred time?  As Mother Elizabeth journeys through her Sabbatical season, we join her in a time of rest and renewal.  Abraham Herschel’s book will help us enter into our season.  “The Sabbath”, he writes, “renews the soul as we rediscover who we are”.

All are welcome in a time of reflection and discussion as we join together in this book study led by our Senior Warden, Matt Bentley. Commencing Wednesday June 8th at 7pm in the Delzell room, the study will run for four consecutive weeks and books will be on sale for $14, after both Sunday morning services starting this week in the undercroft.  For more information, please contact Matt Bentley or Kylie Schwartz.

Cathedral Ridge Capital Campaign: Committee Forming

Cathedral Ridge is a ministry of the Diocese of Colorado, based outside of Colorado Springs.  This ministry of the Episcopal Church in Colorado represents an innovative vision for now and a long-term commitment to invest in the next generation.  A mix of a conference center, retreat center, event center and summer camp, it has touched the lives of St Andrew’s in many ways.  From parish retreats, to youth programs, Cathedral Ridge enhances the inner life of the Spirit and equips people with leadership skills that they can faithfully draw on and put to work in our communities.

But Cathedral Ridge is in need of significant repairs and infrastructure investment in order to meet the needs of the diocese and reach the full potential of it’s mission.  St. Andrew’s, like every parish in the Diocese, has been called upon to pledge funds to support the needed improvements for Cathedral Ridge to fulfill its fullest potential.  Ally Dodge and Meg North will co-chair this important initiative for St Andrews.  Last Sunday, we held information sessions after both services with an overview of the campaign and a Q&A session about our commitment.  We will be forming a committee to identify fundraising options over the course of the summer.  If you have questions or would like to participate on that committee, please contact Ally Dodge at allyincolorado@gmail.com or Meg North.  For more information, please visit http://cathedralridge.org/

Season of Renewal

Book Study The Sabbath, Abraham Heschel

St. Andrew’s Day at the Rockies returns this year on Sunday, June 12 at 200 pm.  The game will be the Rockies vs. the San Diego Padres. Tickets are $18.

Rector’s Sabbatical: A Word from Mother Elizabeth

Dear Friends, On Monday, May 9, I begin a four month sabbatical. I will return to St. Andrew’s on Sunday, September 4. During my time away, I will embark on three journeys of discovery, where I hope to reconnect with stories and places and activities that have brought meaning to me in the past and promise fresh inspiration for the future. It is a special gift that my husband Alan will be able to accompany me on all three journeys. This sabbatical is funded entirely by a grant from the Lilly Endowment.

In June, we’ll make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. We will stay mostly in Jerusalem, but will visit Bethlehem, Nazareth, and other sites as well. Our days of visiting sacred sites will be balanced by evening lectures on Judaism, Islam, and the current situation in Israel and Palestine. As you know from my preaching, entering the sacred story is of primary importance to me. This is a chance to see and hear and touch the story, not only in the imagination, but in “real time.”

In July, we will walk the Pennine Way, a 270 mile footpath that traces the “spine of England” from Manchester to Hadrian’s Wall and the border with Scotland. Many of you know that long distance walking is a passion for me and Alan. We find that days spent walking are “wonderfully clarifying to the mind,” and we love being outside and on the road all day.  We also enjoy arriving at a pub at the end of the day.

In August, we will spend a week at the Wooden Boat School in Maine. Sailing in Maine has been one of my heart’s joys for most of my life; I have spent many weeks on the water with my family of origin, and many happy times with my husband and daughter. This will be a chance to visit a remote and beautiful island that is the ultimate quest for those who sail in Maine waters.

These three journeys will be balanced by times of returning and rest, when I will enjoy my house and garden and help my daughter prepare for her wedding in October.  At the end of this time, I hope to return to you rested, refreshed, and ready for the time to come.

While I am away, the parish will embark on its own season of renewal. A team led by Kylie Schwartz will be planning fun events all summer. Watch for announcements about these. I also expect that a new and exciting opportunity — long a dream of mine for this place and people — may appear on the horizon while I am away. Stay tuned . . .

I am deeply grateful in advance to Mother Melissa, Deacon Wib, senior warden Matt Bentley, and all our staff and parish leaders for their faithful stewardship of this church while I am away. I leave the parish in good and capable hands, and I have complete confidence that with your support, they will meet any challenge that might arise.

Blessings to each of you during this summer of renewal.  I will keep you in my prayers!  Peace, Elizabeth

Mark your Calendar!  Free Special Screening Event Sponsored by Episcopal Peace Fellowship, Colorado Chapter
Salam Neighbor, Saturday, May 14, 4:00 p.m., St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church

Salam Neighbor is a beautifully crafted story that delivers a powerful message. It will leave you touched and inspired to take action.  This film is a must-see.” – UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR)

The filmmakers’ say: “In an effort to better understand refugee life, we spent one month living alongside displaced families in the Za’atari refugee camp. As the first filmmakers ever allowed by the United Nations to be given a tent and registered inside a refugee camp, we were able to get a never before seen look into the world’s most pressing crisis. Our experience uncovered overwhelming trauma but also the untapped potential our uprooted neighbors posses. With the right programs we can support healing, ease the burden on host countries and even empower the disenfranchised by unleashing people’s creativity.”

This film has not been released in theaters yet.  For a link to the trailer, visit http://www.epfcolorado.org

All Our Exploring: Lessons and Carols and Reception, Today at 5:30 pm

Learn about the Rector’s Sabbatical and Our Season of Renewal

This summer we invite the entire parish community into a season of renewal.  Our rector, Mother Elizabeth, will be on sabbatical from May 9 through September 4. Meanwhile, through a series of special events, the parish will reconnect with sources of meaning that have sustained this community for a hundred years and more — while having some fun!

Join us Sunday, May 1, at 5:30 pm, for a “lessons and carols” service called “All Our Exploring.” Afterwards, join us in the undercroft for a party. This will be a chance for Mother Elizabeth to tell us about her sabbatical journeys, for the group planning parish events to tell you what’s in store, and for Mother Melissa to tell you about plans for pastoral coverage.

All are welcome to worship, explore, inquire, and feast.  You are most welcome to come, whether or not you RSVP, but an RSVP would help us plan. RSVP to: http://evite.me/fZrEztbezy
This season of renewal for the parish is sponsored in its entirety by a generous grant from the Lilly Endowment.

Thank you to the following: Al Grinestaff, Michael Van Cleave, Betty Luce, Ken Backensto, Susan Beale, Janice Woodward, Barbara Bomberger, Shelley Brown, Elayne Gallagher, Marilyn Morgan, Karen Mayer, Teri Appell, Judie James, and Nancy Weaver.  The families appreciated our food and care and the Unitarian Church is most grateful for our help in taking care of the families while they are housed at the church.  Let’s hope and pray that with our small contribution to their well-being these families will find their way to housing and gratifying employment. Thank you one and all. Lynne Valentine

Imago Divina: Musical Meditation for Connecting to The Divine, Today at 5:30 pm

The next in our Imago Divina series connecting the arts to the Divine features Ann Martin, Sound Energy Practitioner, Sunday April 17, 5:30pm, in a transformative evening with Tibetan singing bowls.  Having the power to touch the Sacred in each of us, their sound and vibration lead the human heart and mind into heightened consciousness. Through hands-on activities, participants will learn:

The history of the singing bowls and how they are used today

  • The benefits of sound and vibration and the effects on mind, body and spirit
  • How to access connection with Spirit, and inspired intuition
  • How to improve focus and effectiveness of meditation/prayer

The evening will include meditations featuring both crystal and metal singing bowls, and conclude with dinner in the undercroft, where Ann Martin will participate in a Q&A. As thoughts of the day fall away, you can enter “the peace that passes all understanding” on the waves of resonance from the bowls.  When you leave, you will carry a higher vibration to greet your world!

On May 15, our Imago Divina series will conclude with the dance troupe Wonderbound highlighting the connection between movement and the Divine.

Save the Date: All Our Exploring

Our Season of Renewal begins Sunday, May 1 at 5:30 pm
This summer we invite the entire parish community into a season of renewal, where, through a series of special events, we will reconnect with sources of meaning that have sustained this community for a hundred years and more — while having some fun! Meanwhile, the rector will be on sabbatical.

Join us May 1, at 5:30 pm, for a “lessons and carols” service called “All Our Exploring.” Afterwards, join us in the undercroft for a party.

Blessing of the Animals, next Sunday, April 24

Sunday, April 24th at 4:00 pm in the Church with a Reception to follow – tasty treats for all!!

The Racial Justice and Reconciliation Taskforce invites any interested persons to a meeting on Sunday, April 24 from 12:30-1:30 in the Delzell Room to discuss ways in which we can individually and as a community help to realize our baptismal vow to respect the dignity of every human being and our mission to seek to renewal of the world.  We look forward to an engaged conversation and proposals for modes of engagement with crucial issues that have become particularly apparent in this electoral cycle.  For further information, please contact Lucy McGuffey, lucy.mcguffey@ucdenver.edu.

Family Promise
It is once again our time to support the First Unitarian Church while they are hosting homeless families for the week of April 24. We at St. Andrew’s will be responsible for dinner on Wednesday, April 27 and on Thursday, April 28, Overnight on Thursday and breakfast on Saturday, April 30 morning.

Family Promise has expanded its services beyond their housing program. They have a mentor program for families that are housed, but need support to continue with financial planning, education and family help for day care/schooling. Last year, the program housed 73 families composed of 238 individuals. The percentage of families exiting with employment or in education program is 84%. Families moved into stable housing is 70% and 87% of families exiting with an improved financial condition. Family Promise has helped not only helped these individuals to find housing, but to move them into their home with a grant from U-Haul. They also have a grant for Rental Assistance of $65,000 that can help families.

The sign-up sheet will be on the Coffee table this Sunday, April 10, so please check your calendars as to your availability. Thank you for considering this as a worthwhile volunteer position.  Any questions: Lynne Valentine, lkval@yahoo.com or call: 303 955 6911.

A Meal that Heals Cook Day: Saturday, April 30

A Meal that Heals is a pastoral ministry of the Community of Caring that responds to needs by providing a nourishing meal to individuals and families.  Our hope is that by offering a meal in the time of need like a surgery, illness, or childbirth, you can worry less about finding sustenance and more about renewal and refreshment.  Again, we are almost all out of meals!  Please join us in the Undercroft on Saturday, April 30 at 9:30am to enjoy cooking together to replenish our supplies.  We hope to create a number of dishes that we will freeze for future pastoral needs.

How can you be a Partner in Ministry for a Meal that Heals?  We are seeking: chefs, donations of food and supplies, and deliverers.  We invite you to pray about how you can partner in ministry with us.  If you have any questions or are interested in participating, email Barbara Day and Karen Mayes. We look forward to cooking together as a church community at the end of the month!
