Rapid Response System
Occasionally, we are called to advocate and take action with very little notice. There is often no time to call everyone or wait for the next Fruits of the Tree newsletter. For example:
- We find out that in six hours, a state legislature subcommittee will hear public comment about a potential state law responding to homelessness. Because this impacts our unsheltered neighbors, we urgently want to express our views to state representatives and senators.
- The day before a final legislative vote on the same bill, we want to urge St. Andrew’s parishioners to call or email their representatives to vote in favor of our stand on the issue.
- We learn that a protest in response to a police shooting is planned for the next afternoon and we want to encourage Social Justice Ministry volunteers to participate.
- There are probably other happenings that we haven’t anticipated.
The Social Justice Ministry uses a Rapid Response System to quickly send text messages to parishioners as soon as something comes up. These volunteers specifically sign up to receive the texts. And just because you receive a text doesn’t mean you have to participate in that particular action. lt may not be your thing, or you just don’t have time. That’s ok. We just want everyone to have the chance to participate.
