The Seventh Sunday of Easter (2026)

This evening, we will celebrate the Feast of the Ascension, and nine days later, we will observe Pentecost Sunday. In the time between these two major feast days, like the disciples in Jerusalem, we will anxiously await the arrival of the Holy Spirit. Luke begins his second volume, the Acts of the Apostles, with Jesus' promise of the Holy Spirit and a more detailed retelling of the Ascension, which emphasizes that Mary and the women who followed him were also gathered there. In our Gospel lesson for Sunday, Jesus prays for the disciples and his followers throughout the ages. His primary petition is that his followers live together in unity and that our actions in the world may glorify God. Jesus also reveals the true meaning of eternal life. Peter’s pastoral letter encourages the early Christians to remain faithful despite the testing and persecution they will endure (or are presently enduring) so that they may receive future glory. Peter also cautions that the enemy, the devil, prowls like a roaring lion, seeking to circumvent the faithful efforts of Christ’s followers. Have you ever felt that your efforts to bear witness to God’s love were blocked or hindered? In what ways does Jesus' continued presence in this world empower you to share such love? I look forward to seeing you this Sunday at 10:00am.
