(Steeple, Emanuel AME Church, Charleston)

**
Dear St. Andrew’s Families & Ministers to Children,

Several of you have wondered about resources for having conversations with the children in our lives around race, gun violence, disparity and so much more.

In addition to the books and videos we have in the Children’s Ministry office to support families in times of grief, colleagues of mine across the country have been sharing some great resources in the links below. I send them along now, for your “I am prepared when my child is” file.

If I had to choose one book that fosters a generative and loving discussion for a family in challenging times, it would be The Good Shepherd by Jerome Berryman. This book, like the Godly Play story, invites each of us to identify what feels safe, what feels dangerous and nurtures discussion around finding a way though dark times. We have 5 copies to share, some in the basket in the sanctuary and others just waiting to be borrowed from the office. Help yourself!

How else might we be helpful to one another in this challenging world that defies reason and simple answers? I hope you will let me or one of the clergy know.

Together,
Sally

** Help! A Few Face Painting Volunteers Needed (no experience required!)
————————————————————

**
St. Andrew’s and its community connection committee “Discover St. Andrew’s” are inviting us all to the Uptown Neighborhood Association’s Block Party on Saturday, August 1st from 3-6pm at Benedict Fountain Park just on the other side of Wahoo’s.

St. Andrew’s will be offering simple and fun face painting. We have the paint and we have Peggy Bryson and Meg North to lead us but we need a few face paint volunteers for 30 minute shifts from 3-6 pm.

** Our TSE Youth & 2 of Our Veterans
————————————————————
Prior to Memorial Day, our middle school children had a couple of honored guests on the 17th, World War II veterans and St. Andrew’s parishioners Henry Jesse and John Bollenbacher, who told about their experiences in that war and what it meant to them.

Mr. Jesse was in the Normandy Invasion, though not in the first wave. As a German speaker, his job was listening in on their radio transmissions and he saw the vast allied air armada pass over on its way to the invasion beaches. His message was straightforward – we should not hate even our enemies.

Mr. Bollenbacher was close to the Battle of the Bulge. He spoke of landing at the same French pier where his father had landed in World War I, of being assigned to the artillery because his name began with “B,” of serving in four different divisions, and of the surrender of vast numbers of Germans late in the war.

After their presentations, each man was given a card signed by those in TSE thanking him for his service to our country.

is an article I recently posted on our

Families & Faith Resource webpage (http://www.standrewdenver.org/children-families/families-faith) .
————————————————————

**
The research it cites is compelling as we make those daily and weekly choices for our children between sports and church, saying or skipping grace and nightly prayers, helping with an outreach effort or waiting until “next time.” The article was inspired by a new book by Lisa Miller entitled The Spiritual Child. It is available through the Denver Public Library and I have a copy to share.

Maybe you can add it to your summer reading list and we can plan to discuss it in September.

Anyone care to join me?

In the Older Godly Play Circle we shared …

** The Parable of the Deep Well
————————————————————
Perhaps you are wondering why you never heard this parable read in church or referenced? Today in Godly Play we shared the Parable of the Deep Well. It is not one of Jesus’ parables so it does not live inside a gold box as those parables do in our Godly Play sanctuary. Rather, this is a parable from the Jewish midrash tradition that might help us answer the question about what a parable might really be.

In this story, a dry and lonely desert holds a well and nearby bucket for the thirsty travelers who pass by but no rope to lower the bucket into the well. For one traveler who stopped long enough, the nearby scattered pieces of golden threads held the answer.

Wonder with your child about what they remember from this story and think together where are the places in your life today that are dry and scary like the desert. Might you be missing the gift of some “golden threads” scattered there just waiting for you to stop long enough to discover them?

Our Godly Play ministers today were Elizabeth Randall and Anne Thulson.

Today in the Younger Godly Play Circle

** The Synagogue and The Upper Room
————————————————————

** Isaiah 61:1, Luke 4:16-30, Mark 6:1-6, Matthew 13:53-58
————————————————————

We all love this story! The pieces of the walls that form the synagogue where Jesus read to the people from Isaiah as well as the room where Jesus and his 12 shared the last supper “shape shift” into the church nave. Not only does this happen with the physical pieces of the story but the narrative itself shifts. Isaiah speaks on behalf of God in the Hebrew scriptures and the words become something brand new as Jesus confounds the people in his hometown of Nazareth when he claims those same words from Isaiah mean him! In a way, this story holds our hand as it leads us from ancient scriptures down a path to the present, pausing along the way to show us some of the stories that formed us as Christians.

Read the story from a Bible or Children’s Bible at home and wonder together about how Jesus was a prophet “everywhere but his hometown.” How might it be for us if one of our own returned to St. Andrew’s and claimed he or she were the Messiah? Encourage your children to share their favorite part of the story and wonder together why that particular part has energy for them.

The Godly Play Ministers today were Hannah Schechter, Judie James, and Sally Thomas.

** From the Godly Play Circles today…

**
————————————————————

** Pentecost
————————————————————

**
(Mark 16:19-20, Luke 24:50-53, Acts 1:5-14 and Acts 2:1-12)

Pentecost is all about transformation. Today, we remembered together the changes that transformed the disciples to apostles when they received the Holy Spirit. But that doesn’t just happen on Pentecost, does it? We are constantly being invited to the same kind of transformation by this elusive presence of God, this spirit that is as close as our breath but hard to “see.”

Was there a time that you or your child can recall when the Holy Spirit transformed you? What was that like? Did other people see it or feel it, too? Is it happening now?

Our Godly Play ministers were Kathy Fleming,Ally Dodge, Liz Evans and Henry Jesse.

** From the Younger Godly Play Circle today…
————————————————————

**
————————————————————

** The Parable of Parables
————————————————————

**
“What’s really inside a parable?” That is the question we played with today when we heard this story to help us play with the concept of what a parable really is and why Jesus offered them to us. Using a series of nesting boxes, we shared together how the story and words that were just right for one generation of “hearers” needed to be changed to “fit” the next. So parables have been told and retold over hundreds of generations since Jesus shared them with us 2,000 years ago.

So the question for your family to consider is, “I wonder what you think is important about the parables that Jesus told and how will we tell them to the next generation? What might that “box” be like?” I wonder if you have ever come close to what is inside of a parable?

Our Godly Play ministers were Gary Fleming and Judie James.
————————————————————

** From the Older Godly Play Circle…
————————————————————

**
Paul’s Discovery
————————————————————

**
Before he was the great evangelist, Paul was a Jewish scholar called Saul – a Roman citizen, and an avowed enemy of Jesus’ followers. The book of Acts tells us that he held the coats of those who stoned Stephen, the 1st Christian martyr.

But everything changed on the road to Damascus when “Saul” had an intense experience: a great light, causing instantaneous blindness while the voice of Jesus asked him why he was persecuting Jesus’ followers. With this single experience Paul was converted to a follower of Jesus, preaching the good news to Jews and Gentiles alike throughout the Roman Empire.

After starting churches in places like Corinth and Ephesus, he wrote letters (epistles) to those congregations to inspire, challenge, and support their life in Christ. Paul’s epistles are the oldest Christian writings known (57-67 CE).

Sometimes, people change their minds about something. Suddenly, you like a food that you always hated, or perhaps something you liked to do isn’t so much fun anymore. And sometimes, people have an ‘aha!’ moment (like Paul did on the road to Damascus.)
Think—and have some conversation—about times in your life when you:

We heard the Parable of the Good Shepherd, which is found in a gold parable box because parables are gifts that were given to us 2,000 years ago! In the story, The Good Shepherd knows each of his sheep by name and they know the sound of his voice. While he shows the sheep the way to the good green grass and the cool, clear water, he also goes wherever he needs to when they are in danger.

Wonder with your child who the sheep may really be? Who might the Good Shepherd be? Have you ever come close to a places of refreshment or danger like the ones in the story?

** Knowing Jesus in a New Way VII
(Acts 2:1-13)
————————————————————

**
We started to know Jesus through the stories that he told and the stories about him while he lived among us 2,000 years ago. In these past few weeks, we have tried to know Jesus in a new way during the time after Easter and before he ascended to heaven. But this week, we remember how everything changed for the disciples when the Holy Spirit came to them – they could speak languages they never learned… it must have been a crazy scene in Jerusalem! We remembered Pentecost today – 2 weeks before we celebrate Pentecost in church!

What has happened is what the prophet Joel wrote about in the Old Testament. He said that God will pour out God’s spirit on us so that our sons and daughters will prophesy, the young will see visions, and the old will dream dreams. This has just happened in Jerusalem.

In Godly Play, we sometimes describe the Holy Spirit as being like a fragrant scent or a candle whose flame is out but the essence lingers in the trailing smoke – you cannot see these things but still, somehow, you know they are there.

Wonder as a family if you have ever come close to the Holy Spirit. Is that a feeling you have now? In the past? Hope for? What does it feel like? Anything like the disciples felt?

Blessings on your time of wondering together

** We need your help to ensure the right number of helping hands on Sunday mornings just in case our wonderful nursery care providers have their hands full. While you will never be asked to replace a nursery care employee or be in charge, we all know that sometimes there are enough children that an extra set of hands is needed!

If everyone takes a turn every month or so then we will have plenty of help for those occasionally busy Sunday mornings. By “ taking a turn,” we mean being at church and willing to pitch in only if needed. Who knows, you may never even be called to help but just knowing you are at church “in case” will ensure that our nursery has all the help we need on the busiest of Sunday mornings.

Knowing Jesus in a New Way V
(Matthew 28: 16-20; Mark 16:15-18)

Jesus has risen but has not ascended into heaven. His disciples meet him on a mountaintop in Galilee, just as Jesus asked them to do. “Go everywhere. Tell my story, even this part, to everyone. Show everyone how to be good disciples.”

Jesus said more to them, “Tell them the story so they can become part of it.” “Baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”

For the disciples, this may have been too far, too much. But in the midst of their confusion, they heard him say, “I am with you always to the end of the age.” Then he was gone.

Jesus was always doing strange things – coming and going. And yet, he always seemed to ask his disciples to do challenging but important things. Sometimes they didn’t want to hear Jesus ask them to do one more hard thing. This business of being a Christian was not the easy road then and it is often not the easy way today!

Wonder as a family what hard things are happening in your lives right now. Would they feel harder or easier if you asked God to be with you as you faced them? Why?

(Matthew 3:45-46)
————————————————————

** The Parable of the Great Pearl (also know as “The Pearl of Great Price”) is less than 25 words in Matthew but takes much longer to tell in Godly Play. A merchant sells EVERYTHING he owns, including his house and every possession inside, to obtain the single great pearl for which he had been searching.

What would be so valuable that someone would give up every possession they had to obtain it? What is your Pearl of Great Price? To what might you be too attached to seek your own pearl? Wonder together … we bet there will be some surprises!

** Today we heard the Parable of the Leaven, which is comprised of 26 words total in Matthew’s gospel and 23 words in Luke’s. Was Jesus an educator or a communicator according to John Maxwell’s description? Was he making something complicated into something simple or vice versa?

Pull out your Bible (or read the copy pasted below) for this bit of scripture is accessible to all ages and wonder together how is it possible that the Kingdom of God is like yeast? Your child may tell you that in Jesus’ time, leaven (or yeast) was considered dirty by virtue of the fact that it was fermented, making the question even more provocative.

Blessings on both the simple and the complicated – it is the nature of parables and of Jesus!

** (John 21:1-23)

The Eastertide journey continues in Godly Play as we are still finding that Jesus keeps appearing unexpectedly. He had risen on Easter – Alleluia! – but he just kept showing up in surprising ways before his ascension. In this part of the story, Jesus’ disciples made the long trip to Galilee as Jesus had instructed and stopped at the Sea of Galilee, which was home to some of them. Fishing was unsuccessful until someone tending a fire onshore called out to them to throw their nets to the other side. Why not? The nets filled immediately and they had to drag themto shore. John recognized that the man on shore was the Lord and Peter had hopped out of the boat to get to Jesus! Jesus gave Peter special instructions, “Feed my lambs… tend my sheep… feed my sheep.”

Wonder at home together what Jesus might have meant. How do you tend or feed any of Jesus’ sheep? How do your children? Listen to one another and you may hear something Jesus has been trying to share with you for some time!

** Parable of the Good Samaritan
(Luke: 10:25-37)

————————————————————

** Parables are the closest thing we have to the actual words of Jesus. The phrase and concept of The Good Samaritan may be familiar but if the details are fuzzy, you may want to watch the video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cC88j6v5keE) or check the scripture to get the story straight.

In our Godly Play circle today, we heard the story and wondered together why a man whose people, the Samaritans, distrusted the Israelites (who felt the same about the Samaritans) would stop and help one such man who had been robbed, beaten, and left on the side of the road half-dead. A priest and Levite, both thought to be devout men of God, crossed to the other side of the road and passed by.

We spent time wondering how the story might have changed if the hurt person or the helper had been a woman or a child. Who are the Samaritans to your family? Who does your family ‘Samaritan’ to? Ask your children their thoughts before you offer yours. I bet there will be some surprises!

Our Godly Play ministers were Bill Thomas and Susan Backus.

Easter is such an amazing mystery that it cannot be contained in just one Sunday. It spills over into six more weeks we call Eastertide.

Eastertide is our road to Pentecost.

Today in Godly Play we began our journey through Easter to Pentecost by beginning a serial story about the appearances Jesus made after his resurrection but before his ascension. Today, we remembered how the 3 ‘Mary’s’ were the first to go to the tomb, to be near to their beloved Jesus, and found it empty. One Mary heard the gardener call her name – but it wasn’t the gardener at all – it was Jesus. With that, Peter and John raced one another to see the empty tomb. “They could feel his presence in his absence.”

Each of us experiences Jesus differently. Wonder with your child how it must have felt for those who went to the tomb and how you would have felt if it was you who were there. Blessings on your wondering together!

Our Godly Play Ministers today were Anne Thulson & Lois Hartman.
